Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Report on excavations carried out in 1994 in advance of redevelopment, at a site at which previous excavation and evaluation had taken place and for which cartographic evidence existed dating back to 1795, as well as early-twentieth-century photographic evidence. Occupation evidence from the seventeenth century to the present included nineteenth-century terraced slum dwellings and three smithies, plus evidence of button making and in some cases of sanitation arrangements. Three major deposits of domestic debris may help to characterise the material culture of different social groups in Chester. Seventeenth-century evidence included pottery and moulded plaster from the foundation deposits of a building, the latter possibly from a fireplace; a stone-lined cess pit; a rock-cut cellar; and several rubbish pits. Roman remains included the southern wall of the `Elliptical Building' excavated and recorded in the 1960s, and a second wall about 400mm to the north; floor or courtyard surfaces, associated in one place with a possible column base, which may have held a substantial wooden column; a rough sandstone wall from the final stage of Roman occupation, which sealed a cut containing a substantial drain; and parts of the barracks of the First Cohort, the earliest timber traces dating from the first century AD and the final phase continuing in use until the late-fourth century. Three Neolithic flint artefacts were also found. | |||||||||||||||||
