Abstract:
The distribution of burnt mounds (fulachta fiadh) in Cos Laois and Offaly, and in north Tipperary, is considered in relation to the local environment and the availability of resources such as fire-resistant cobblestones and running water. It is argued that they may mark the camps of herders who accompanied livestock on their wintering grounds, rather than those of hunters. A saddle quern found in a burnt mound at Ballybryan, Co Offaly, may indicate longer occupation of the site. Major climatic cooling after 500 BC brought about changes in the winter farming economy after which burnt mounds seem to have been abandoned. Includes an inventory of Fulachta fiadh recorded in Cos Offaly, Laois & North Tipperary' (207). TGF
