documents an excavation at the fortress, in which trenches were positioned on the front gate; the defences; and the interior buildings. Dendrochronology suggests that the site was constructed during the winter of 44 and 45 AD, while it seems that the base was abandoned at some time between the AD 50s and AD 60s. The gate itself probably had a forecourt and two wooden towers connected by a bridge spanning the entrance. Two gullies which led through the gate, parallel to the via praetoria, are interpreted by the author as having supplied water to the fort, potentially making Alchester the earliest site in Britain with an artificial water supply. The defences were found to be more extensive than it had previously been thought | |||||||||
