Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The evidence for birds and mammals recovered from excavations at the former Royal Navy Victualling Yard opposite Tower Hill in London and a new method of combining all the stratigraphic and environmental evidence shed new light on several aspects of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century life: contrasts and connections between high- and low-status diets; changing dietary fashions; statutory fish days and the Spanish Armada; milk supply; the cattle trade; and industries (tanning, and the working of horn, bone, antler, and tortoiseshell). A new method is presented for the use of fragmentary cattle horn cores as corroborative dating evidence, and investigations are conducted into the mysterious fate of the `missing victuals' (slaughterhouse waste that may have been shipped to Holland to make glue for furniture). | ||||
