Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The paper examines a series of Roman period sites, arguing that an area corresponding to the former County of Avon may also have been created, under Roman administration, into a separate Canton from the Celtic tribelands. The author discusses a number of anomalous sites and features which appear to indicate the presence of Imperial authority. The article considers the Canton of the Belgae; the Imperial mines on Mendip; the coastal marshlands; native settlements, villas, and roads; Sea Mills; Bath; and the geology of the area. | |||
