Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The National Museum of Ireland's acquisition in 1914 of a seemingly highly important hoard of gold ornaments was to prove, ultimately, to be an embarrassment to the institution. The acquisition was repudiated in 1935 when the objects were melted down. However, the objects acquired were only a small part of a much larger collection of fakes, some of which remain in public collections. The paper describes how the hoard was acquired, traces its source and discusses the implications for museums and collectors. Includes | |
