Abstract:
NX 18706099. Both cairns give evidence for multi-period construction and tend to confirm the view that Clyde cairns began as simple chambers in small cairns, but were later elaborated into monumental cairns with semi-circular façades. Mid-Gleniron I started as a small rectangular chamber in an oval cairn; then to the north was built a somewhat similar structure. Later, both cairns were enclosed within a single outer revetment, the intervening spaces were filled with cairn material, and a semi-circular façade and a lateral chamber were built. The cairn contained at least nine cremations in cinerary urns. In Mid-Gleniron I an ovate cairn with simple chamber had been enclosed in a long cairn in which it now formed a lateral chamber. A shallow façade gave access to a new terminal chamber which was subsequently closed, and the forecourt blocked. Sherds and flints were obtained from the blocking. Two further cairns were examined, one had been a burial cairn with ?urned cremations, the other was a well-built circular cairn with small square chamber (see also 69/457).
