Text of inaugural lecture given by the recently appointed Edward Hall Chair of Archaeological Science at the University of Oxford. Explores the meaning of the term archaeological science. The achievements, limitations and future prospects for physical dating methods, artefact studies and the study of man and his environment, representing three of the prime areas of archaeological science, are then considered. Finally, some of the general problem areas that will need to be tackled in the future, together with Oxford's intended contribution to solving these problems, are discussed. |
