Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, samian samples from the three centres were analysed for percentage of CaO, Fe203, TiO2, K20, SiO2, Al2O3, and MgO. Least valuable for characterisation were SiO2 and CaO, while most useful was Al203. Clear-cut separation of one site from the other two was provided variously by the other four compounds. Lezoux products were studied in detail because of a change from a ware with low lime content, soft and porous, similar to the coarse pottery, in the first century, to a later ware with high lime content and vitrified slip characteristic of the Italic tradition of the other sites. It is concluded that samian from the three centres can be correctly differentiated without difficulty. Preliminary work on separating samian from other production centres shows equal promise in many cases; difficult are those with similar geology, such as Lezoux and Vichy. A J C | |||||
