Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Previous work on iron-arsenic alloys has shown that considerable superficial arsenic enrichment occurs during oxidation at high temperatures. This process could well explain the layers of high arsenic concentration often observed in the micro-structure of early (Roman to Viking) iron artefacts. Experiments have been made to determine how far the alternative theory of the use of Fe-As alloys as joining media could be responsible. These alloys can in some cases facilitate joining, but the result is an embrittled joint; when the arsenic content is reduced sufficiently to avoid this there is then no advantage over the normal hammer-welding without an arsenic layer. Similar experiments carried out with phosphate led to similar conclusions. Au(adp) | ||||||||
