Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The surfaces of several specimens of various ages and origins were subjected to different degrees of grinding and polishing. It is shown that in the case of Roman and medieval glass, even when apparently in an excellent state of preservation, the surface material is likely to be chemically modified and should be removed before XRF analysis if the composition of the true glass is to be determined. The amount of sodium and other light elements in the natural surface of a specimen varies according to the age of the glass and the enviromnent to which it has been exposed. Au | |||
