Abstract:
Presents the first direct evidence for the origin of the dichroism of the cup. Transmission electron microscopy shows that the glass contains numerous crystalline particles, of which the most important for the colour-change property are the small crystals of colloidal metal - silver, gold, and copper - which cause light-scattering. It is not yet known how the uniform distribution of these particles was achieved, and the difficulty of the process explains its rarity. (See also David Whitehouse, 'Roman dichroic glass: two contemporary descriptions?' in J Glass Stud, 31, 1989, 119-21.)
