Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Since 1961 large-scale archaeological proton gradiometer surveys needing up to 50,000 readings have been undertaken in the Rhineland; the computer treatment required is detailed. Punched paper tape automatically records readings and positional information in the field for transference to punched cards and magnetic tape for computer input. Data treatment takes two main forms: digital filtering, to minimise the effect of non-archaeological variations; and modification of the appearance of the visually presented data. Up to twenty different filter treatments can be tried at present; these are printed out using symbols of varying density, and compared with the raw data. If necessary, the best result is modified to enhance pictorial contrast and reprinted. Dot-density plans are then produced by plotter. Programme diagrams and examples of plots are shown. Scollar at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum is prepared to process, at cost, data submitted in a form suitable for computing. AJC | |
