Reports 1989 test pit sampling in advance of gravel and sand extraction at a 12,000m2 area in Quarry 2 at Boxgrove. Two areas were identified as meriting further investigation. Two test pits in area Q2/C produced handaxes, over 90% of which had tranchet sharpening at the distal end. A small amount of core reduction and only a few flake tools were found. Faunal remains were located in the northern part of the excavations, C. elaphus and Bison sp. exhibited traces of human modification. Comparison of the results of artefact retrieval via direct excavation in metre squares and bulk sieving of units within them, indicates that where on-site time is limited the integration of these methods is a valid technique in terms of both qualitative and quantitative terms. The excavated areas are interpreted as a tool-sharpening and butchery site that may have been a fixed and known locale in the landscape, and a location on the periphery of an area of intensive knapping reduction. Ends with `[Notes on Q2/C vertebrates] Pinguinus impennis, extinct great auk' by J R Stewart (347). | ||||
