Abstract:
From 1946 to 1952 excavations were undertaken of a series of Neolithic and Early Bronze Age monuments, including a long enclosure, a cursus, a double ditched henge, pit circles and ring ditches with primary and secondary cremation burials, and a notable Beaker burial. This report describes the sites which remain unpublished (Sites III, VIII, IX, XII, XIII & XIV) along with the results of the 1981 excavation of further surviving parts of the complex; Sites 1, a long D-shaped enclosure incorporated in the southern end of the cursus, 2, 3 and 4. The complex is related to its local and regional context and the sequence of developments is discussed. A timescale measured in generations is advocated, with phases of continuity and episodes of little activity both represented. Several aspects of monuments are considered: their differing scales including the monumental; their ability to endure and create tradition; and finally the choice of designs, from the locally customary to the exotic. Includes I W Cornwall's comments on the soils and ditch fills (147), followed by: `Site VIII, the long enclosure' by A Whittle & R J C Atkinson (148--52); `Site I, the long D-shaped enclosure and the cursus terminal, and site 2, a penannular ring ditch' by R Chambers (153--8) including notes by M Harman on `Human bone from F3003' (153) and `Cremations' (156--7); `Site III, the northern end of the cursus and a later field system (site IX)' by A Whittle & R J C Atkinson (159--62); `Site XI, a multiple-phase ring ditch and pit circle' by A Whittle (162--6); `Site XIV, a ring ditch' by A Whittle & R J C Atkinson (166--9); `Site 3, a post circle' by R Chambers (169--75) including notes on `Cremated human bone' by M Harman (170), `Charcoals and carbonised plant remains' by M Robinson (170 & 173) and a `Discussion' section with A Whittle (173--5); `Site XII, a beaker ring ditch and grave' by A Whittle & R J C Atkinson (175--84), including a note recorded in 1950 by D F Roberts on a human skeleton, now lost; `Site XIII, the Big Rings henge' by N Thomas & A Whittle (184--93); and `Site 4, paired ring ditches with cremation burials' by R Chambers (193--5), including a note on the `Metal analysis' by P Northover (194). The final `Discussion' section by A Whittle (195--8) encompasses the entire complex.
