Abstract:
Excavations during 1983 and 1985--87 on the site of a Bronze Age cremation cemetery discovered twenty-six cremations and two disturbed inhumations. The Bronze Age pottery assemblage was a mixture of Collared Urns and Food Vessel Urns, and fragments of two Beakers were found. All the pottery except one of the Beakers was made from local clay. A clay connecting rod for a furnace was discovered within one of the cremation burials and is one of only two finds which show any link between metal-working and burials within the Collared Urn tradition. A number of animal bone toggles and pins were found within the cremations, which consisted of six female and five male burials. Radiocarbon samples gave a date range for the Collared Urns of 2460--1520 BC. A series of reports detail the `Petrology of the Bronze Age pottery' by I Freestone (340), `Discussion of the pottery and worked bone' by I H Longworth (340--6), `Flint artefacts' by R H Bewley & G Varndell (346), `Human bone' by S Browne (346--9) and `Carbonised plant remains' by J P Huntley (349--50).
