Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Three sample areas were investigated by field-walking; 260 hectares produced over 5,000 chipped stone artefacts and much burnt flint. Density of artefacts and frequency of retouched items varied significantly between geological zones and soil types and indicated greatest activity during the Early Neolithic. Certain fields are identified as settlement areas; domestic activity is postulated on terraces of Lower Chalk, with industrial activity and hunting on Upper Chalk downland. Intensity of occupation was equal to that in other parts of Wessex where monuments are more numerous. Two appendices cover `The survey area' (174) and `Analysis and presentation of lithic artefact distributions' (174--5). BOC | |||||||
