Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
It is argued that the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic cultures of SE Europe, previously seen as the result of diffusion from the Aegean, were independent evolutions firmly based on the tell and other settlements of the First Neolithic. Evidence of continuity, of stratigraphy and of calibrated radiocarbon dates strongly suggests the chronological priority of Balkan copper metallurgy over that of the Aegean. The strength of the case for independent discovery is illustrated by the graphited wares of Karanovo VI (early 4th millennium BC) which were fired in the same high-temperature and reducing conditions as those needed for copper casting. Analysis of two Balkan Copper Age shaft-hole axes shows that they were cast, not hammered from native copper. If the argument is accepted, the separation of the Balkan cultures from any supposed dependence on Troy and the Aegean has important repercussions on views of the development of the Neolithic cultures of Central and Northern Europe. | ||||||||
