Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Four major metal clusters (A-D) are distinguished using the c 160 analyses of Scottish objects performed at Stuttgart and the approach to metal analyses devised by Waterbolk; these four clusters contain almost all of the objects analysed. A survey of Scottish EBA metalwork (publication forthcoming) has distinguished three phases of industrial activity. The first, or Migdale, phase using A and C metals saw the production of thin-butted and the typologically earlier thick-butted axes as well as other objects of direct Continental inspiration. The second, or Colleonard, phase was a period of expansion using all of the four major metal sources. Continued contact with the Continent led to an increased number of types. In the later 16th and 15th centuries BC the appearance of bronze flanged axes and various types of knives and spearheads (reflecting the metal equipment found in southern England) marks the third, or Gavel Moss, phase and precedes the insularity of the Middle Bronze Age.
