Abstract:
Reinterpretation of the late MBA site at Shearplace Hill throws doubt on the association of the weaving comb with the BA structures, and raises new possibilities for the reconstruction of the timber round houses. A rephasing of the occupation suggests that only one house was occupied at a time. House A probably had two phases, each with the wall set in an encircling groove aligned on the outer pair of porch posts. The house diameter is consequently increased from c 27ft to c 35ft. Two possible reconstructions of roof and wall structures are discussed, with particular attention to the complex timberwork at the entrance. Similar reinterpretations at several other sites would suggest that many BA round houses may be much larger than had formerly been supposed, and that they could provide an insular origin for the double- and multiple-ring round houses of the Iron Age.
