Abstract:
The Portland Beds are the source of a chert which was exploited and quite widely distributed in Mesolithic times, and to a lesser degree in earlier and later periods, for the manufacture of pointed picks, scrapers, microliths and many other types of tool. One of the occupation sites on the SE slopes of Portland (Culver Well), recently excavated, gave a C14 date of'late 6th millennium BC. Another, possibly earlier site on Portland Bill (Site 1), yielded, in addition to microlithic scrapers, burins and retouched flakes, many characteristic Portland Picks (fairly crude pointed rod like tools occasionally sharpened with a transverse blow). Outside the Isle of Portland, the distribution of chert artefacts shows a coastal and riverine spread, with its outer limits at Lands End and the Mendips and Hampshire, as early as mid-5th millennium. These are catalogued, together with chert artefacts from the later prehistoric period (mainly Neolithic types) which are, however, more sporadically distributed.
