Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An account of prehistoric fortifications (pa) of New Zealand, including ethnographic and archaeological information, may prove helpful to students of European hillforts. The cited examples, built of earthwork with timber superstructures, are morphologically similar to those of NW Europe but tend to be smaller as well as of totally different cultural background. Summaries of the ethnographic and archaeological evidence precede more detailed accounts of two excavated pa - layout of defences and internal structures, storage pits, cooking arrangements and diet - and extracts from 18th century accounts of the then functional fighting platforms. | |||||||
