NN 797472. Excavation corrected the view of Croft Moraig as a single-phase monument as follows: Phase 1, horseshoe-shaped post setting open to SW (?roofed building); other postholes including a pair of elongated holes each for three uprights. Phase II, levelling of the area with soil containing Neolithic pottery, and erection of a stone oval on the same axis as Phase I and with an external arc to the S. A surrounding stone bank apparently of this phase contains a recumbent cup-marked slab and may have had two entrances (? Class II henge). Phase III, erection of a stone circle around the oval setting with two outliers implies a change of axis from SW to SE. Two empty grave-pits by the outliers suggest burials in Beaker or Food Vessel tradition. The Neolithic pottery is a mixture of coarse bucket-shaped vessels and sherds of "Western" Neolithic tradition. | |||||||||||
