Abstract:
This interim report covers the first 410 results of the thin-sectioning programme. Types include axes (with some possible adzes), flakes presumed to be from axes, perforated axes/adzes, maceheads and pebble-hammers, axe-hammers and battle-axes. Distributional study shows two major concentrations - along the Fen edge west of the Icknield Way, and in the Colchester-Ipswich area (where Cornish groups are particularly well represented and may suggest sea-trade). Breakdown maps show distributions for the various groups. Associations are few but include Grimes Graves flint-mines and Grooved Ware, Beaker and Wessex Culture material.
