Abstract:
Explains the principles of underground storage of grain and summarises experimental results so far. The research programme aims to discover how pits function, both in the general economy and in particular circumstances. The optimum shape is the beehive; linings are not essential; clay, dung or cob can be used for sealing; once sealed, pits can be trampled over; grain for consumption must have been stored in jars above ground, while seed corn was best stored in pits; pit life appears unlimited. Many data remain for collection and analysis, and excavation of archaeological pits needs greater care.
