A hitherto unrecorded coin type bears a remarkably clear representation of a ship on its obverse. Found in a pit of earlier 1st century AD, the coin is probably of Cunobelin's bronze Victory series. The ship accords closely with Caesar's description of the boats of the Veneti; its use here suggests that Cunobelin was claiming cross-Channel trading contacts. | |||||
