Abstract:
Recent reassessments of Bronze Age chronology have tended to stress a continuity and conservativeness from 1400-700 BC which is not substantiated by a close regional assessment of the pottery of first half of first millennium BC. Deverel-Rimbury wares are separated from those which follow them in Thames Valley/Wessex/Sussex/E England regions in later BA and which show a wider range of forms and functions; this change was initiated in the S and E coastal area, and Wessex and the Upper Thames suffered isolation for a time, picking up again from 8th century BC.
