SU 605678; 678000. The Aldermaston Wharf site had 49 pits scattered around two damaged round houses, one of which may have been associated with bulk storage of grain. At Knight's Farm the recording of features (pits, ovens, small ponds etc) during gravel scraping salvaged quantities of artefactual and environmental evidence and yielded 14C dates spanning 13th to 6th centuries. Both sites seem part of an evolving system by which agricultural surplus was converted in the Upper Thames region into social prestige related to control of river routes. | ||||||||
