Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
An inquiry into the birth of prehistorical words and their relatives in French, English, and Danish concludes that three authors played a crucial part: Guizot (1828) first used 'anté-historique', Tournal (1833) applied it in the context of the antiquity of man, and Wilson (1851) established the word 'prehistoric'. Although both the three-age system and the realization of human antiquity date to the 1820s-30s it was their combination a generation later which saw the real beginning of the idea and the word 'prehistory' . Also considered are 'antediluvian', 'pre-adamitic', and 'palaeolithic'. | ||||
