Unretouched flakes, Clactonian notches, true notches, and a unifacial chopper were all used in a series of experiments on staves of yew wood. Results are described, tabulated, and illustrated: it was found that the best reproduction of the Clacton spear resulted from the use of the Clactonian notch, scraping rapidly with an inward motion. A similar result was obtained with four softer woods. | |
