Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Describes the trepanation in the skull of this mature female, one of ten inhumations in the cemetery. It has been suggested that the eleven Anglo-Saxon trepanations known so far in Britain may have been carried out by the same person: the indicative characteristics are shared by this case, although it would appear to be the only female example. No religious significance is suggested for the trepanation and there is no skeletal evidence to indicate a medical condition for which it might have been performed. | ||
