Abstract:		 There are no documentary references to a castle at Ratley, but the earthworks of a motte and bailey exist on a natural spur of the ironstone ridge. Limited excavation in the north bailey and motte revealed a twelfth century spur ringwork which was succeeded by a stone structure, possibly an entrance tower. On either side of this structure was an internally revetted bank, which formed the north enclosure of a bailey associated with a small motte. The dating of the motte and bailey castle from the finds suggests that it was in use in the late-twelfth century and was out of use by the early-thirteenth century. The site was quarried intermittently into the post-medieval period. With finds reports on Roman pottery, medieval pottery, small finds of copper alloy, iron and moulded stone, and `Animal bones' by George Hodgson (24). Au
