Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavations in advance of development in Brook Street, Warwick, uncovered medieval pits, a drying kiln, and a clay oven. Apart from a few residual Neolithic sherds and flints, the finds date from the eleventh century onwards. Stephanie Ratkai describes the `Medieval pottery' (8--22), `Post-medieval pottery' (22--5), and `A late 17th-century pit group from Lord Leycester Hospital' (26). The `Neolithic pottery' is covered by Ann Woodward (26--7), `Iron working residues' by Gerry McDonnell (27) and `Iron objects' by Ian H Goodall (27--30). Alison Goodall continues with `Copper alloy objects' (30), with `Animal bone' described by Julie Hamilton (30--2). Christine Hodgetts then discusses the `Documentary records' (32--3). The contrasts between the archaeological and documentary evidence show that neither on its own would provide a satisfactory picture of the history of the street. The discussion compares the site to two other recent urban medieval excavations: Bridge End, in the suburbs of medieval Warwick; and Much Park Street, in urban Coventry. Microfiche reports give further details of excavated features and finds, including: `Medieval pottery' and `Building materials' by Stephanie Ratkai; `Stone samples' by John Crossling; `Flint' by John Pickin; `Iron objects' by Ian Goodall; `Copper alloy objects' by Alison Goodall; `Coins' by W A Seaby; `Iron working residues' by Gerry McDonnell; `Clay tobacco pipe' by Nicholas Palmer; `Animal bone' by Julie Hamilton; and `Documentary records' by Christine Hodgetts. | |||||||||||||||||||||
