Abstract:
A paper tracing the discovery of the pavement and setting the mosaic in its architectural context. There is a detailed description of the `painted ceiling' panel of the floor concluding that its design probably represents scenes from the epic of Achilles and may be influenced by the design of the shield of Achilles. The polychromy of the pavement may be influenced by textiles and the design may also attempt trompe l'oeil effects rather than simply being a transposed ceiling painting.
