Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Article describing in detail a font in the parish church of St Thomas, Mellor, Stockport. Whilst undated, the font is considered likely to be of the 11th or 12th century. The five figures carved on the font are discussed and, although there are few parallels, some other 'tub' fonts in Derbyshire are mentioned and the decoration on a font at Tissington, Derbyshire, is examined in detail. It is concluded that whatever the uncertainties about its date and the message conveyed by its decoration, the Mellor font is an object of considerable interest. LD | ||
