Abstract:
Emergency excavations in the village of John o'Groats revealed a shallow but complex series of deposits adjacent to a field known to have produced both human remains and a flint axe. Remains were found of a prehistoric settlement, which had been substantially disturbed by two separate episodes of burial. Radiocarbon evidence suggests the first began in the eleventh-twelfth century AD and the second took place in the sixteenth-seventeenth century. Burial during the early period was extremely intensive: in addition to burials, masses of disarticulated human bones were recovered. There are specialist reports on microfiche by A </ze> MacSween `The pottery from John o'Groats' (M4--9), W </ze> Finlayson `Lithic report' (M10--14), S T </ze> Driscoll & A </ze> Young `Catalogue of human remains' (M15) and S T </ze> Driscoll & P Robertson</ze> `Catalogue of animal remains' (M16), also `Radiocarbon dates and calibrations' (M17---19).
