Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The 1991 Presidential Address to the Glasgow Archaeological Society examines the pattern of Roman occupation in southern Scotland. Even with substantial advances in knowledge made since the 1970s, including location and discovery of sites mainly from the air, much remains to be discovered. Gaps on our map of permanent Roman installations may be filled by considering isolated finds, which might derive from Roman sites yet to be pinpointed. Locations are proposed for sites and roads in various parts of southern Scotland to be identified. The substantial number of Flavian forts suggests occupation in that period may have been more flexible than hitherto supposed, while in the Antonine period bolstering of garrisons along the wall probably resulted in numerous sites elsewhere being given up. | ||
