Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
There is no justification for the view that kingdoms allied to Rome took over responsibility for the defence of the north after AD 369. The absence of post-369 east Yorkshire pottery north of Hadrian's Wall is decisive. After a peaceful 3rd century during which units south of Hadrian's Wall were withdrawn, new units were brought into this area, presumably as part of a reaction to the new menace of the Picts. Rome lost control north of the Wall in 367; the Roman names of the rulers of the kingdoms that then arose are a result of Christianity, not of love for Rome. BD | |||||
