Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Note on a large leather artefact identified as an animal-mounted water carrier, or water budget, excavated in 1998--9 at Rickergate, close to Carlisle Castle, in a section of the defensive ditches. Its construction is described in detail, along with dating evidence -- it is thought to have been deposited at some point between the late-fourteenth and the late-fifteenth century. The author gives an account of its identification from contemporary depictions of water budgets, along with interpretation of some of its more enigmatic features, a description of other items found with the carrier, and a discussion of its use. | |||||||
