Abstract:
Discusses problems of reconciling l4C dates with historical evidence: statistical treatment suggested the pre-rampart fires could be those of Edward the Elder's AD 921 works. The Stuiver calibration curve was used. One fire is 'wrong' by two centuries still; 'anomalous dates . . . continue to occur and will continue to be rejected'. In the plant remains, oats and peas predominate and are discussed in relation to documentary sources, other finds, etc.
