Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavation prior to building work revealed the presence of late Roman activity, dating from the mid-third to early-fourth century AD, to the north of the Roman Saxon Shore fort. This activity consisted chiefly of the digging of a quantity of shallow irregular gullies, possibly for drainage or for horticultural or agricultural reasons. It is clear that the area excavated was not located within the area of extra-mural settlement, although the density of features suggests settlement nearby. Specialist reports include `Prehistoric pottery' by Nigel Brown (65), `The Roman pottery' by Katherine Horsley (66), `Roman pottery from the evaluations' by Colin Wallace (66-7), `Saxon pottery' by Susan Tyler (67), `Medieval pottery' by Helen Walker (67), `Plant macrofossils' by Peter Murphy (67-8), `Mollusc report' by Katherine Reidy (68), `Small finds' by H Major (68), `Coins' by Steve Wallis (68), `Coins recovered during the evaluation' by Philip McMichael (68), `Building materials' by H Major (68-9), `Faunal remains' by Rosemary Luff (69), `Flint report' by Louise Austin (69), `The soil micromorphology of layer 554' by Richard Macphail (69). | ||||||||||||||||||||||
