Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Work by the author revealed that the standard calculation of U-values (measures of heat loss) for walls leads to an over-estimate in a high proportion of cases. A discrepancy between measured and calculated U-values can have serious consequences, resulting in misunderstanding of the actual energy performance of walls in pre-1919 buildings and leading to wasted resources and potential damage. Measuring the U-value of a wall emph{in situ is not a realistic option for most buildings, so the Sustainable Traditional Buildings Alliance is working alongside two government departments to improve the conventions that govern the calculation of U-values.
