Abstract:
Outlines the methodology and outputs of the Strategic Stone Study, an English Heritage project which aims to comprehensively map all the active, dormant and historic quarries within England, identifying the building stones they provided and matching them to buildings and structures. The project arose from a need for architects to be able to identify available sources of suitable matching stone for the repair of historic and traditional buildings, and for new buildings and extensions that need to complement the buildings around them. Thirty-two English counties have so far been mapped by the project, although there is currently no funding to complete the study. LD
