Abstract:
How best to conserve historic ruins such as medieval abbeys and castles has been a long-term challenge for English Heritage. The hard mortars conventionally used to cap walls can be prone to cracking, so a recent research programme has been assessing the role of soft capping with soil and plants, both naturally developed and human emplaced. The research has found that soft capping provides a very good thermal blanket, although monitoring of moisture levels within soft-capped walls has yielded divergent results. LD
