Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Whilst many former quarries and hitherto unworked deposits are potentially available for the extraction of stone, many other sites cannot be accessed for a variety of reasons. In order to maintain supplies of traditional building stone it is important to protect viable sources from development that could prevent their future exploitation. This can be achieved through 'mineral safeguarding': the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) requires local authorities to define Mineral Safeguarding Areas and adopt appropriate policies so that they are properly considered in planning decisions. The process of identifying and defining such areas is outlined in this article. LD |
