An important contribution to the conversion of non-residential buildings to housing is being made by former psychiatric hospitals, empty as a result of the introduction of Care in the Community from the late 1980s. Their historic background is briefly outlined in this article, and three developments currently being completed by the Homes and Communities Agency as part of the Hospital Sites Programme initiated by the former English Partnerships are described, at: Hanham Hall Hospital in Bristol; West Sussex County Lunatic Asylum at Graylingwell on the outskirts of Chichester; and Fair Mile psychiatric hospital at Cholsey in Oxfordshire.
