Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Editorial to the first edition of Conservation Bulletin since the splitting of English Heritage into two separate bodies, a change described here as 'a thoroughly good thing'. Solutions are suggested to two of the big challenges faced by the new Historic England. Firstly, the gap left by the falling numbers and eroding quality of conservation officers across the country can be filled by specialist heritage architects and surveyors with qualifications, experience and a love of heritage. Secondly, the issue of preserving historic skylines within cities where increasing numbers of tall, bold modern buildings are being constructed can be dealt with by getting the best staff within Historic England, alongside other international experts, to work out precisely what makes an urban cityscape or view worth preserving and what does not.
