Abstract:
Reports on excavations undertaken in 1991 and1992 in advance of gravel extraction at Little Birches, in the former manor of Wolseley, near Rugeley, Staffordshire. Two phases of glass making were identified, one possibly in the fourteenth century, the other in the mid-sixteenth. Analysis of production debris showed changes in technology between the two periods of use. A nearby site at Cattail Pool was also examined and the existence of other glasshouse sites in the area is demonstrated using documentary and other evidence. Appendices comprise: `Analysis of the glass' by C Mortimer (38--43); `Petrological analysis' [of crucibles, furnace fragments and glass waste] by D F Williams (43--6); `Refractory materials' by Richard N White (46--51); and `Pottery' by Deborah Ford (51--3).
