Abstract:
An account of excavations undertaken during 1996 at the Hermitage Basin, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, site of a documented tin-glaze (delft) ware manufactory. Two successive bottle kilns were revealed -- this type of kiln is normally associated with stoneware or earthenware production, although no other evidence for the manufacture of anything other than tin-glaze wares was found. These kilns predated a rectangular kiln that was in use after 1720 and which may have produced tin-glazed wall tiles and stoneware. The finds demonstrate that Wapping needs to be included with Southwark and Lambeth as a centre of manufacture in the period 1665--1773. Specialists' contributions comprise: `The pottery' [and kiln furniture] by Roy Stephenson (146--53); `Tin-glazed wall tiles' by Terrance Smith (153--5); `The accessioned finds' by Richenda Goffin (155--7); and `The clay tobacco pipes' by Kieron Heard (157--8).
