A series of excavations south of the Roman fortress, on the spur of land between the Rivers Ouse and Foss, provided evidence for the nature and extent of settlement in Anglo-Scandinavian York. They also showed how much could be learnt from an examination of well-preserved organic remains � plant and insect assemblages gave an indication of diet and living conditions; tools and leather offcuts recovered suggested intensive leatherworking. The book also includes a review of current evidence for the evolution of the defences around the Roman fortress and how they were altered in the Anglo-Scandinavian period. With contributions by D.
